5 Interview Tips (From a Recruiter Who’s Seen A LOT)

At Cruit Group, we’ve sat on both sides of the table, coaching candidates and advising clients. After thousands of interviews, we know what makes someone stand out and what makes hiring managers quietly move on. Here are our top five interview tips for job seekers:

1. Do Your Homework (Beyond the Homepage)

Anyone can skim a company website. The best candidates dig deeper: recent press releases, industry trends, the hiring manager’s background. When you can connect the dots between your skills and what’s happening in the company’s world, you instantly look more prepared than 90% of applicants. Utilize AI to enhance your interview prep.

2. Know Your Story

Every resume has a story, make sure yours is clear. Practice walking through your background in 2-3 minutes, focusing on career moves, achievements, and the “why” behind your decisions. A concise narrative shows confidence and self-awareness.

3. Answer with Impact

When asked about your experience, avoid vague generalities. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Specific results, “I increased revenue by 25% in six months”, stick far better than “I helped grow the business.”

4. Ask Smart Questions

Interviews are two-way streets. Candidates who ask surface-level questions (“What’s the culture like?”) blend in. Those who dig deeper (“How does the team measure success in the first 90 days?”) stand out as thoughtful and invested.

5. Close Strong

Too many interviews end with a limp handshake and “thanks for your time.” Instead, summarize why you’re excited about the role and how you can add value. Then, yes, really, ask for the job. Hiring managers remember candidates who show genuine interest and confidence.

💡 Final thought: Interviews aren’t just about proving you can do the job, they’re about proving you want the job. Bring preparation, clarity, and energy, and you’ll be way ahead of the pack.
